Performance Architecture & Engineering in a nutshell Performance Architecture & Engineering is an essential practice for any DevSecOps team, allowing developers across departments to stay agile and efficient. Application performance can dramatically impact an organization’s bottom line. A design flaw or crash of even a few minutes can cause a loss of thousands or millions of dollars — while finding the source of the error in an increasingly complex system can take time as well. This means user experience and the managed performance of your application must be incorporated throughout the app’s lifecycle, not just when it is first launched. Performance Engineering can be defined as an understanding of how all the parts in a system fit together and scale in performance from the beginning. Performance Engineering allows the basic elements and building blocks to be put in place early in the Software Development Life Cycle. Performance Engineering approaches align properly with agile methodologies by implementing the 'Shift-left’ strategies to address the quality & performance issues and requirements since the beginning. The coverage would include the infrastructure (including middleware), data technologies (store, stream & schema), engineering (APIs and code libraries), design (architecture) and security of the systems. With a growing number of DevSecOps teams continuously deploying applications, performance engineers must be engaged regularly, as well as on-demand, to ensure the quality (speed, cost, integrity) and stability of every additional integration. Roles & Responsibilities Lead a team of performance engineers/architects to work on various products. Lead the development of design/architecture inspection methodologies. Lead the development of testing methods and metrics to uncover performance/scalability/security flaws. Work with application teams to perform tests to validate system performance and stability. Analyze tests results and work with Developers and Site Reliability Engineers to perform bug fixes and design improvements. Provide technical assistance to improve system performance, capacity, reliability, scalability, process & data integrity, cost and security. Perform root cause analysis of performance issues and suggest corrective actions and subsequently any redesign or technology replacement that is necessary. Oversee system performance lifecycle and identify key metrics for performance improvements. Evaluate system performances and recommend improvements or redesign frequently to keep it at optimal level of performance, stability and security. Harvest design artifacts to be reused Generate periodic performance reports for management review. Maintain the technology standards documents of the enterprise and participate in architecture and technology reviews. Requirements Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, related technical field involving systems engineering, or equivalent practical experience. Experience in architecture of complex transactional systems. Experience in analyzing and troubleshooting systems. Understanding of application & Infrastructure monitoring, logging. Understanding of data technologies (data stores, streams, architecture) Understanding of containers and related technologies (kubernetes, API management, service mesh, etc.) Understanding of emerging technologies like serverless computing and multi-cloud operations. Understanding of networking (e.g. TCP/IP, routing, network topology, load balancers, DNS, NTP). Experience in Public Cloud, AWS and/or GCP. Experience in dealing with legacy data centres and applications.(SAP knowledge is a plus) Experience in designing Internet-facing production-grade applications. Experience in standard IT security practices (e.g., encryption, certificates, key management) Excellent communication, and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
